How to Confirm the $90 Payment Is Real
Got an unexpected $90? Confirm it the safe way: check your my Social Security account at ssa.gov or call SSA at 1-800-772-1213.
You got $90 you were not expecting. Before you spend it — or before you worry about it — take a few minutes to confirm it is real. It only takes a few steps, and you should only use official sources.
Step 1: Check Your my Social Security Account
Go to ssa.gov and log in to your my Social Security account. This is the official Social Security website. Look at your payment history. The $90 should appear as a Medicare Improvement Fund payment, labeled along the lines of "Medicare Improvement Fund Payment; $90 Payment to Offset October Premium."
If you do not have an online account yet, you can create one at ssa.gov. It is free. Never create an account through a link someone sends you by text or email — always type ssa.gov into your browser yourself.
Step 2: Call SSA Directly
If you prefer the phone, call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. This is the official number. A real SSA employee can confirm whether the payment was sent to you.
Important: if someone calls you claiming to be from SSA, do not trust the caller ID. Scammers can fake it. Hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 yourself.
Step 3: Match the Facts
A real payment matches all of these:
- The amount is exactly $90.
- It arrived (or is arriving) in October 2026 — direct deposits started October 8; paper checks go out late October.
- It is labeled as a Medicare Improvement Fund payment.
- Nobody asked you to apply, pay a fee, or give personal details to get it.
If any of these do not match, treat the payment — or the message about it — with suspicion, and call SSA.
What the Real Payment Is
The real $90 is a one-time Medicare rebate from the $2 billion Medicare Improvement Fund, sent to about 20.8 million traditional-Medicare beneficiaries to offset the October Part B premium. It is not a permanent increase, not the COLA (the 2026 COLA is 2.8%), and not the $500 ACA refund checks in the news. See what the $90 payment is not for the differences.
Red Flags That Mean "Scam"
SSA will never call, text, or email you demanding gift cards, wire transfers, or your bank password. SSA will never threaten you with arrest. If a message about the $90 does any of these things, it is fake. Read scams targeting seniors over the $90 payment for the full list of warning signs.
Bottom Line
Check ssa.gov or call 1-800-772-1213. If the $90 is there in your official records, it is real. Everything else — surprise calls, urgent texts, emails with links — should be ignored.
